Tasmania is Australia's island state. It is a heart-shaped island of lush green valleys, uncrowded towns and villages and still undeveloped coastlines. Tasmania is one of the world's most mountainous islands and while its peaks do not tower to great heights, they are unique in their serrated profile.

Places to visit:

Cradle Mountain is the central feature of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of Tasmania's World Heritage area. The park covers an area of 124 942 ha which is characterised by a rugged, glaciated landscape with over 25 major peaks and a wide range of glacial formations - tarns, glacial lakes, moraine deposits, U-shaped valleys and waterfalls. There are numerous walking huts, a wide range of day and overnight walks through the mountains, a road to the edges of Dove Lake which lies in the shadow of Cradle Mountain, and plenty of excellent accommodation.

Freycinet National Park consists of knuckles of granite mountains all but surrounded by azure bays and white sand beaches. Freycinet is effectively two eroded blocks of granite - the Hazards and the Mt Graham/Mt Freycinet sections of the peninsula - joined by a sand isthmus. Freycinet National Park offers a wide variety of activities. Take a walk to the pass overlooking the perfectly shaped Wineglass Bay or try less strenuous activities like beach strolls, swimming or wildlife spotting.

Port Arthur was established in the 1830s as a penal settlement. It remains a physical chronicle of a dramatic part of Australia's history. Its 60 or so buildings and picturesque landscape offer visitors a challenging mix of both beauty and horror and have helped the site to become Tasmania's most popular tourist destination.

Tours to Tasmania may be booked online through the registration form. Click here if you would like more detailed information on the tours available through the APAO Sydney 2011 Congress Secretariat.
